With most Store Championship events on the horizon for Star Wars LCG, we wanted to take a little bit of a deeper look at what exciting swag players can get their hands on this year.
The promotional card for the Top 32 players this year will be an alternate art for Chewbacca (69-02), which sadly lacks the excitement and impact the original art featured. While the Walking Carpet is still seen tossing Stormtroopers around, this time he looks a lot less ferocious and is accompanied by a pair of mischievous looking Ewoks.
The art was done by Christopher Burdett, a talented FFG artist who also designed the dreaded ‘Fruit Ninja’ Yoda from Gencon 2014. It’s not that Burdett’s art is lacking in style or creativity, it’s that the image doesn’t often relate to the impact and meaning of the card itself.
This also marks the third year in a row of Store Championships featuring Light Side ‘mains’ as the alternate art image. In 2014, players were treated to a fantastic rendition of ‘Han Shot First’, and in 2015, Watchers in the Wasteland Obi received a beautiful upgrade in appearance.
The Top 8 players will all receive a rather lackluster deckbox, and if you’ve attended any local tournament for Star Wars LCG over the last year or more, you’ve already got a dusty collection of these things sitting somewhere in your home. While not one to turn up a nose at swag prizes, it would be nice if FFG ventured out and tried something different (it took years for them to drop the image-based plaque – how long until they drop giving players product we couldn’t possibly need more of?).
The real reason to attend a Star Wars Store Championship event this season starts in the Top 4, where players will receive an amazingly cool playmat of the Tarkin Doctrine art. We had hoped to see this at Gencon or Worlds as the Top 16 prize, but it is way cooler for FFG’s Organized Play to drop it in a fashion that will be much more achievable for most players. This is seriously gorgeous art and will make for a very nice playmat!
Last but not least, the first place winner of any Store Championship will receive a first round bye to any Regional of their choice! With the lack of ‘superbyes’ this year, the first round bye is less appealing as before, but still a very serious take-away for anyone planning on playing in the upcoming Regional season. There is the added plaque as well, and this year FFG has removed all art (thankfully) and replaced it with a very professional and very appealing description of your title.
As a side note, we want to mention that any player looking to dramatically increase their swag will want to partake in an Imperial Assault Store Championship this year, as their Top 4 prize features something that should be very familiar to all of us SWLCG players.
That’s right – each person to make the Top 4 at Imperial Assault store championships will receive a Rebel/Imperial Navy Balance Coin! This is truly a questionable prize, at it’s literally a straight rip of our Jedi/Sith balance coin. But what makes one really scratch their head is that it has literally no meaning to the Imperial Assault game itself. It’s being called a ‘Challenge Coin’, and we can’t wrap our heads around why they have it. But if you want to bling out your game even more – make sure you get your hands on one!
